September Minutes
September 13, 2008

Fall Festival:  We need to know how many people have special dietary needs, vegans, etc for the planning.  **Fall Festival has been cancelled, contact Rocio for information regarding Boo Party**

There was a determination that there were going to be two food prizes – one for dessert and another one for a side dish.

For the Mad Hatter, Margie is in need of more beads for it.  It will be auctioned off at the Fall Festival.  Please send the beads to Margie and she did provide her address as well.

Becky advised that she did not receive any beads for the bracelet for the web designer.  The designer knows she is getting one from the group, but is still waiting.  Beads need to be small and bright colors.  Becky will wire the bracelet.  Becky provided the group her address for the donations.

Rocio brought up an idea about collection beads for vendor appreciation:  The vendors that support us all year should receive some beads from the group for appreciation.  If you made a bead that uses a CattWalk tool, mark the bead which tool you used if you want your bead to go to a specific vendor.  They support us all year and this is a little way of saying thank you to them.  These beads will be collected at the Holiday party in December.

New seats available:  Co President  - 2 year team and the secretary position which was taken temporarily by Jill.  Any seats must be voted on by the paying FGD members.  The elections will be done via email.  A question came up about why emails and the answer was because more people could vote since not everyone can attend meetings.  As Becky stated, these are voluntary positions and are very time consuming.

Candice talked about her volunteer work rescuing pets affected by the hurricanes.  She just got back from Louisiana and is now heading out to Texas.  She was asking for a donation to Noah's Wish.  Email address is
patienthand@cfl.rr.com**Trip cancelled, please contact Candice for more information**

Treasurer amount was $2751.09.  Becky noted that is normal at this time of year because of the Fall Festival and that we raise a lot of extra cash at the festival.

Vendor tables are available.  There is no cost to have a table if you donate an item for auction over $25.  Dicussions about this is a great opportunity to get rid of things that you don't use (old tools, books, etc)

Chris and Margie brought up The Activities Committee issues:  They are working on next year's activities and would like people to let them know if they could have a meeting at their house.  Any suggestions for meetings or even if they would like to see guest artists.  Any recommendations are welcome, they do not want to be the only one's with ideas for this.  So please send them any ideas.  They are already planning for next year!

Rocio mentioned Sarah Hornick's e-book called Think Pink.  There is a link to it on LE, but it is a great book with a lot of great information on it.  Holly recommended that people take it to Kinko's to get copied since it is photo heavy.

December party was listed as happening December 13th, but will be moved to December 5th.  More people will be able to attend since it is getting too close to Christmas and conflicts with Holiday parties.  There is no November meeting.  There will a Bead Bizarre open to the public.  So the FGD meeting will be early and the Bizarre opens at 1pm.  They also want to raffle a little Christmas tree with beads. So everyone should donate a bead at that party.  Beads cannot be larger than 1 ½" x 1 1/2 " .  ow how many people have special dietary needs, vegans, etc for the planning.

July Minutes

July 13, 2008

12:00 p.m. Meeting called to Order.  Kathi Truba, co-president, welcomes everyone to the meeting.

The artist(s) for the Fall Festival were discussed in length.  We are awaiting word from Leah Zincke, if she is available we will have two soft glass artists.  Kim Hart is going to teach the other class.  If Leah is not available, Holly will send an email to all the members asking their preference for a boro artist or another soft glass artist.  More information will follow.

The duties will remain the same for this year’s Fall Festival.  Jill will be responsible for Porta Potties, Kathi for tables and chairs, Becky will get the torches, and Holly will get the oxygen.

Treasury report – $2901.90.

Our membership forms have been revised.  The new form will include verbiage asking if the new member would like their information published on the website.

Becky also discussed our agreement with the Beads of Courage Program.  We initially sent $1500 for the startup of our local group with the agreement to send $500 per year as maintenance.  Becky received correspondence from them and they are only asking for $170 to purchase additional beads.  We will be submitting that payment to them.

Susan Matusick and Becky Mason have been interviewed for an article that will be featured in the Health Section of the Orlando Sentinel.  It will discuss the BOC Program and our involvement.

The Gathering Postcards were distributed.  They are awesome!!!  Thank you Margie Chan and Chris McElroy, you did an incredible job!  Margie’s husband took the pictures and they are amazing.  Our postcards have been mailed to the Gathering committee for this year.

There is not an August meeting; the next meeting will be  September at Holly Young’s studio in Rockledge.  Holly will do a demonstration on silver tubing beads.  More information will be forthcoming on the project.

Rocio presented new Cattwalk presses and beautiful silver glass, “Ivy.”

The raffle winner was Holly and she won twisties and shards.  Food challenge winner was Jill, Blueberry Crunch Cake (the recipe will be posted on the website).   Attendance raffle winner was Helen Starkweather.

The jewelry design winner was Becky Mason; the judges really had a hard time selecting a winner with all the great entries!

Margie did a demonstration on soldering jump rings.  It was very interesting and well done!  Thanks Margie!

‘Till September, Jill Hoblick – FGD Secretary

June Minutes

June 15, 2008

11:55 Meeting called to Order.  Kathi Truba, co-president, welcomes everyone and the guests introduce themselves.

The Officer changes were announced – only one person submitted interest in assuming the secretary position, Jill Hoblick.  Jill will take over secretary duties until the elections in October.  Holly Young, co-president is taking over the web mama responsibilities to free up Jill’s time to complete the secretary duties and continue working on the quarterly newsletter.  If you have any comments or suggestions for the website please contact Holly, for newsletter correspondence please contact Jill.

Treasury report – due to Becky Mason’s computer crashing, the following information is approximate; $3200.00 is the total in both group accounts.  Becky is in the process of recovering her data.

The $400.00 Gathering Scholarship was awarded to Melody Spence.  Way to go Melody!  Melody will be attending the ISGB Gathering in Oakland this year.  We can’t wait to hear all about it after she returns!

Beads of Courage Update – The meeting at Glenda Long’s resulted in 210 beads being donated.  That is awesome!  Becky Mason received a letter from the BOC program expressing their gratitude for all our support and incredible donations.  We moved them to tears with our generosity.  They stated “Florida Glass Dragons is their super supporter”.  They also provided a receipt for tax purposes.  If you have made bead donations and have not received a receipt and you are interested in obtaining one, please contact Becky Mason.  Please make sure when you are contributing beads to include a card with your name, address, and the amount of beads you are donating.

The new website is up and running!  There are new email addresses listed for the officers and committee members, please be sure to make note of them.

Apparel is also available on the website, it is provided by Café Press.  Be sure to check all the products out.

Ginny Hopping of Design and Detail designed the new site and included a forum for us at no charge.  We would like to show our gratitude to Ginny by making her a charm bracelet.  If you would like to participate in this thank you gesture, please forward brightly colored lampwork beads to be included.  Becky Mason has graciously offered to put the bracelet together.  Thanks Becky!

Speaking of the forum….. Please check it out!  Register and participate in our very own forum.  This is a member only forum and will be a great place to chat, post items to sell, exchange ideas, or whatever!  Insults or other derogatory threads will not be tolerated and will be removed by the Administrator.

Holly wanted to hear comments on the website.  It was unanimous, change the font from green to an easier color on the eyes.  Holly will make that change.  She will also be adding maps to upcoming meetings.

We have made a change to the way we send emails.  They will be sent as a blind copy format in order to keep everyone’s email address private.  We will also be asking questions in the form of opting in instead of opting out.  Please make sure you respond to questions posed to you in order to make sure we know what your preferences are.

A committee for the ISGB 2009 Gathering is in the making.  Please let Kathi and Holly know if you are interested in joining the committee.  If you are planning on attending and this will be your first Gathering, you may not want to commit to volunteering your time as there is a lot to see and do.  Helen, Melody, Glenda, Jan Comos, Jan, Kathi, Jill, Candice, Becky, Diane, and Rocio volunteered at the meeting.  We will be stuffing guest bags and working on the post card project.  It was suggested that we have some type of volunteering project as a group.  It is also not too early to start making beads for the Bead Bazaar.

Trey Cornette sent his best wishes to the group through Rocio.  He wished he could have made it to the meeting, but he wanted us to know he was thinking of us.

The Fall Festival is approaching.  We have names of possible artists; Kathi and Holly will talk with them and then forward the names to the members for their opinions.  We still may have two artists, one at Jill’s house and one at Kathi Truba’s Studio.  More information will be forthcoming.

The next meeting is scheduled for Sunday, July 13th at Margie Chan’s home in Orlando.  The theme will be Mad Hatter and the challenge will be finished jewelry.  The maximum amount of raffle tickets you can receive for entering monthly challenges has been changed to five (5).

1:00 p.m. meeting adjourned.  I left before the fun of playing with silver clay began; I hope to hear how it went from some of the other members.

Till next month, Jill Hoblick – FGD Secretary

Sunday, May 18th, 2008 - Kathi Truba's Studio

The Secretary position is available.  Cindy has stepped down due to outside committments that will keep her from performing her secretarial duties.  If you are interested in assuming this position, please notify the Co-Presidents, Kathi (kathi@glassicarts.net) or Holly (hollyyoung@cfl.rr.com).
We welcomed the new/semi new members to our group:  Holly from Art Glass House, Cindy from Cassadaga, Helen from Orlando, Peggy from Orlando, Jan from Orlando, Candace from Orlando, and Susan from Winter Springs.  A few of these gals have been around for awhile, we just wanted to make sure they got a big welcome!  Kathi gave them an overview of the Beads of Courage program.
We had a special guest, Sara from the Orlando Sentinel came to the meeting.  She is doing a story on the Beads of Courage program.  She talked to the members about their participation in the program and saw a sampling of beads we donate.
Kudos to Becky Mason, group treasurer!  One of her awesome hearts was shown in the current issue of Glass Beads, published by the Internation Society of Glass Beadmakers.  The article was also shown to Sara from the Orlando Sentinel.  Way to go Becky!!!!
Kudos to Susan who won a focal competition on LE and Jan Tunnell on her gallery opening at Gallery One Artist in Kissimmee.  Wooohooo Ladies!!!
As you can see, the new website design is finished, now it is time for the work to really begin!  Jill Hoblick will be updating the website.  Please send her your eye candy to hoblick@aol.com
The newsletter is close to completion, just a few minor details and it will be sent out to current members via email.  Make sure Jill Hoblick has your current email address.
Margie, Candice, Helen, and Shaymie attended the show in Lake Mary on the 10th of May.  It was very windy, but they did do demos on a hot head, Shaymie's daughter even demo'd!  They may consider participating in another show after the weather cools down!
The next meeting will be held at Rocio's Studio in Cocoa on June 14th.  Rumor has it that we will be playing with silver clay!  If so, there may be a nominal fee to cover materials.
The July meeting will be held at Margie's.  The date has been changed from July 12th to July 13th.  Please mark your calendars!
Margie and Chris will be completing the Gathering Postcards this coming week.  If you provided a bead to be photographed, it will be returned to you at the next meeting.
Discussion was raised about compensating the hosts of each monthly meeting.  A gift basket was suggested.  We will discuss this more in the future.
If you receive an email asking you to vote - PLEASE VOTE!  We want your voice to be heard.  This is your group - VOTE!
The $400 scholarship for the Gathering is still up for grabs.  If you are going to the Gathering in California this year, please submit your essay.  One of our Sister Groups will do the judging.  It is an awesome addition for anyone attending the Gathering!
After the business meeting we played with Kathi's sandblaster!  We each got to sandblast beads and fused glass that we brought.  I know I speak for everyone when I say "It was a BLAST!"
